Mastering.it and electric guitars
25/09/2013
We had been thinking about it for some years and, at the beginning of April 2013, we did it: building an electric guitar with a personal sound and without any painting. This experiment seems to be successful, thanks to some professionals and friends who tested the instrument and improved sonic and mechanical performance. It seems that “it sounds damn pretty good".
Later on, we even implemented a second one, which is our version of what a Stratocaster may become to be perfect for the sound engineer and the guitarist roles. This electric guitar, not for sale, was considered by many good musicians to have a “divine” character and sound: the qualities we try to dead with in our everyday job.
These two guitars, named N1 and N2, have two different and personal acoustic characters that maximize the concept of "solid body" from the point of view of sound engineers and musicians.

Two musicians' reviews:

[Francesco Rubino]
Francesco checked both models, the "N2" and the "N1", on three amps: a Marshall JCM800 (1980) single channel, a Fender Stage 160 watt, a Vox AC30 (1978), using an Electro Harmonix Metal Muff with Top Boost stomp, sometimes.
His remarks:
Model N2: (bottom right in the picture)
"I would call this guitar post-modern, especially for its sounds. In my opinion, it is particularly suitable for brit pop/rock, alternative and grunge. The guitar is beautifully built and absolutely perfect in balance. It is an absolute pleasure playing the N2, for the convenience of its shapes and for its very comfortable neck. I found it very interesting especially for the unbelievable sound attack. Above all, I love it for the fantastic funky sounds that I pulled out, while working on the (excellent) dynamics of clean sounds".
Model N1: (top left in the picture)
"It can bewitch you even before wiring, not only for its beauty, but for its acoustic volume. Without any amp it has a great voice! I had searched such a clean acoustic sound for a long time, and I can hear its loud vibrations without any amp. It is certainly my favorite one.
It is an eclectic guitar, I was amazed by its pickups quality sound. With a lot of gain on the bridge position, you can easily get a violent and rich sound, great for “really hard” rock. The central position has a rich, warm sound, very smooth. It is almost impossible to find such a good sound on super-branded-industrial-guitars. The sound nuances and tones are simply amazing, both clean and distorted. The sound becomes smooth and quite dark with the neck position. The N1 sounds unusual for a “Les Paul inspired” guitar, but it has a very high quality, it is smooth, warm, whether you like bluesy or jazzy nuances, whether you want to make a hot solo coming out from the band.
The neck pick-up “sings” damn good, even distorted. It has a pleasant voice with a strong presence that can come out from the mix.
Among its qualities, I must mention the excellent sustain. Such a great guitar, well balanced and lighter than the Les Paul classic. Very comfortable neck. The N1 is the one I enjoyed more, the one I prefer".

Test condition:
The audio chain was composed by: Guitar N1, or N2, or a Fender Telecaster Thin Line, an Electro Harmonix Big Muff (with true bypass) and a Fender Stage 160W solid state guitar amp.
"I played (in the Mastering.it studio room) the N1 and N2 clean and distorted through Big Muff and the Fender Amp. I had the F. Tele just for an industry comparation.
N1:
The absence of several coats of paints seems to liberate the sound in all its strenght and colour. A perfect combination of neck and body.
N2:
This has a sense of fluidity (flow) that makes it perfect for clean or slightly saturated stuff. The N2 gets really hot when distorted.

They both have a great "punch" and a really crispy "bright". Exploring the range of combinations quickly turns into a deeply inspiring experience. Imagine the best guitar you've ever played: BETTER!
Note: The natural soustain of the N1 and N2 makes the sust knob of the Big Muff practically useless, while it had to be turned up for the Tele.
Now I am waiting for... the bass!!!"

[Giuseppe Cantelmo: guitar player, bass player, artist (Italy, England, Brazil)]

The N1 and N2 are high quality hand made guitars from our labs. We are considering to accept request for some limited replicas, but first we would like to "open" the check of these instruments to other musicians, so we recommend guitarists booking a test to have their straight opinion about both the N1 and the N2! We are waiting for you.
